VJF 6.1 Camp for Nature Lovers #2: Protect the Nature in the Forest in Jena and around the Fuchsturm

Work: In the first week, you will work with local foresters in the wood of Jena. You tasks will include various environmental works, e.g. maintaining footpaths, lookout points and shelters. Your help will be needed for different nature protection projects. Please be prepared for environmental works to help the rangers only outside. In the second week, the volunteers will help the environmental organisation  Fuchsturmgesellschaft to chop down trees for a better visibility and let a bright landscape appear from the way leading to the tower and maintenance work in the flora-fauna habitat. Your help will be needed in

the Education Path, also huts need renovation or maintenance. This is a camp for nature lovers! Work can be physically challenging at times.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in an isolated hostel on a hill in the Western part of Jena. Each room has 10 beds and your only neighbours will be the woodland animals.

VJF 6.2 Medieval Camp #2: Renovate and Excavate the 13th Century Fortress Wysburg

Work: The volunteers are asked to help on the excavation ground of the fortress with building work, repairing and painting walls, carrying stones or cleaning. Other tasks can be removing of bushes or documentation of your work. It is possible that you will be asked to help on another excavation place to do punctured excavations (1m x 1m) and filter the finds. Please be prepared for any work outside.

Accommodation: You will live in a community house in the village, with toilet and shower facilities provided. All bed linen is provided.

Special remarks: Please be prepared to live in a very remote area!

VJF 6.4 Never forget #5: What Happened in Buchenwald? Archaeological Excavation and Studying about German NS-History

Work: The volunteers will work in the memorial of the former concentration camp of Buchenwald. We will do several jobs in the area of the memorial like cleaning, gardening and restoration in cooperation with the curators of the memorial and participate in an archaeological dig to find any artefacts relating to the prisoners. Our work will also include tending to the original remains of the former concentration camp in


Study part: We will get to know more about the time of fascism, covering the areas of racism and neo-fascism. The responsible pedagogical assistant of the memorial will show us the camp, step-bystep, through different excursions. Moreover, we will see documentary movies, and those who would like may work with materials of the library or the archive.

Accommodation: You will sleep in the Youth Centre building, situated on the area of the former concentration camp in rooms for 5 persons. Sanitary facilities including showers are available.

Special remarks: For this Workcamp it is necessary to have very good English skills! A motivation letter - specific to this project - is required!

VJF 6.5 Papilio: Renovate the Kids and Teens Recreation Center in the Thuringian Mountains

Work: Volunteers will improve the grounds of a nice leisure centre. Tasks are likely to include construction and renovation. One of the most important works will be renovating the animal enclosures. Another be finishing the work of last years workcamp, designing the recreation room with pool, darts and so one. Other environmental and construction works outside and inside are possible, please be open for any other work. Interest in artisanship and creativity are welcome!

Accommodation: You will live in a Guesthouse. Up to 5 volunteers will share a room, bed linen will be provided. The group will have its own common room.

VJF 6.6 Wurzbach Deutsch-Camp: Meet'n talk to German People and Families

Arbeit: Dein Arbeitsbereich wird in der Natur sein. Die Gegend war früher die Grenze zwischen DDR und der BRD, heute zwischen Thüringen und Bayern. Die Gegend ist Teil des sogenannten Grünen Band, einem Naturprojekt und wichtigen historischen Ort.  In diesem Camp geht es um den Schutz der einzigartigen Flora und Fauna und die aktive Landschaftspflege: Handsensen-Workshop, die Mahd von Feucht- und Bergwiesen sowie das Entfernen von Gehölzen und Heidepflege. Auch andere Umweltarbeiten sind möglich. Bitte bring unbedingt wasserdichte Arbeitssachen mit! Die Arbeit wird immerdraußen sein und kann körperlich anstrengend sein.

Unterkunft: Ihr seid in einem Gebäude untergebracht.


Work: Your workplace will be in the nature. This area was previously the border between the two former German countries and is nowadays the border between Thüringen and Bayern. This area is part of the so-called Green Belt, a nature project at an important historical place. The topic of this workcamp is to protect its unique flora and fauna. Volunteer should come prepared to take part in a range of outdoor environmental activities in the Green Belt. This is a project for nature lovers!
