Work: WORK: Can include reconstructing a hiking path by building stone structures (stairs, walls) and by digging tread ways and drainage ditches or helping rebuild a trail shelter. You will get muddy! Learn trail building skills. Work safety is our highest priority. Location: LOCATION: Danby is 2 hours east of Albany, New York in southern Vermont. LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Explore Vermont swimming holes, historic villages, and forested mountains. Partner: This project, hosted by the GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB, is for vols who are experienced at camping with no running water or electricity. Vols must be able to carry a 40 - 60 pound (18-27kg) backpack several miles (a few kilometers.) Join with local volunteers to build a piece of the Appalachian Trail, a wilderness footpath that runs 200 miles through the mountains of the eastern U.S. http://www.greenmountainclub.org/ Requirements: SPECIAL REQUESTS: Bring hiking boots, backpack, sleeping bag (rated to 20 F/ -6 C) and sturdy work clothes. Work is physically demanding and is done outside in all weather. Volunteers must plan to arrive Rutland on the Sunday at the beginning of the session for orientation, and depart on the Saturday at the end of the session. Accomodation and food: ACCOMMODATION: Monday - Thursday nights at a primitive campsite in the mountains. Spend the days off at a base camp in town. Tents are provided.
