Work: We will collect seeds, maintain nature trails, revive ponds etc. on Mt. Makihata. Part of the Greening Asia project. We will also visit schools to raise awareness and mobilize the local youth to protect nature in their own area. On one day, we will help local farmers by harvesting vegetables. Study: Protection of mountain areas in each country and Greening Asia. Bring some info.! Location: Mountainous, agricultural town about 170 km north of Tokyo. Famous for the best sake and rice! The hut we will stay at during the 1st week is a paradise to some with millions of stars visible! Terminal: Tokyo (2 hours by bullet train or 4 hours by slow train). Leisure: Exchange parties, excursion, etc. Partner: Organized together with the Japan National Trust since 1995. JNT buys lands to protect nature and cultural heritage such as old temples and trains, beautiful beaches, etc. It has been conserving Mt. Makihata (1,967m) for 30 years now. The wildlife and landscape has been damaged by tourists but is still retains much of it's beauty. On a couple occasions local climbers were surprised to see foreign volunteers’ working to maintain and conserve the area and joined our efforts in cleaning up. Requirements: You need to be ready to be physically challenged, to climb up the mountain and also to enjoy working with kids. Accomodation and food: Tents or a mountain hut in the 1st week and a community center in the 2nd.
