Work: Jeju is a volcanic island located off the south coast of the Korean peninsula, formed from volcanic activities that began approximately 1.2 million years ago. In 2007, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes to its World Heritage List. Jeju was also designated as an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2002 in recognition of its diverse ecosystems. Gotjawal is a specific plant union formed naturally on lava-based rocksides lava-based rocksides that are common all around the Jeju island. Because of its role in clearing underground mineral water that has been the main source of drinking water for the island, gotjawal is acknowledged for its ecological importance. Gotjawal Saramdeul is an environmental NGO working to enhance awareness of ecological conservation of Gotjawal around the island. One of their main interests is community involvement in development processes and sustainable living. Volunteers are invited to participate in an ecological study tour around the island and engage in local activities to conserve nature against large-scale development. W: Volunteers will take part in various hands-on activities at Gotjawal Saramdeul¡¯s educational center and engage in intensive ecology- and environment-related field visits and discussions. Location: LO: Jeju is the largest island in Korea, located off the southern coast. Partner: Gotjawal Saramdeul Requirements: Special Requirement: Campers need not be native speakers, but must have a good level of English. Also, volunteers must be flexible and willing to cooperate on whatever projects become available. Accomodation and food: A: Volunteers will be housed together in the educational center. It is not necessary for participants to bring their own sleeping bag, mat, or other bedding.F: Food is provided.
