Project Description
IIWC-LMTV01/Abu Hurairah Orphan House/Salatiga Central Java/Kids, Edu/Any date except July-August/18+/2 vols
Abu Hurairah orphanage is one of moslem orphanages located in Salatiga (2 hours by bus from Semarang city center) with 65 children living in this orphanage. Orphanages in Indonesian's sense can be slightly different from those in other countries because orphanages in Indonesia do not always mean for the orphan children providing them with places to live, but also a place for the children coming from poor family background that they can get possibility to have education.
Abu Hurairah orphanage serve the function as a place to stay for the children as well as to have education at least up to senior high school (in most cases up to the children reach the age of 18 years old). Most of children are orphan but many of them are also coming from poor family background that can not afford for the children's education.
The needs that we identified from this project are: capacity building for the children to increase their self confident, inter cultural learning, additional English classes, and skill development for the children.
Please note that the orphanage has 3 parts; 2 in Kauman (girls orphanage and for boys aged from 6-15 years old) and Soka part ( for older boys). The volunteers’ placement will depend on the need and decision of the orphanage, either the volunteer will go to Kauman or Soka part.
Project: Organized together with the Moslem orphanage of Abu Hurairoh, the volunteers will organize additional English lessons for the children in the afternoon and evening (the children live separately between girls and boys and mainly the volunteers will work with the boys) and in the weekend or holiday, the volunteers can also organize additional fun activity for capacity building and self confident raising. Because of the limited time that the volunteers can spend to have activities with the children (most children will go to schools in the morning), the project will be also combined with school projects where the children are going to. The volunteers will be expected to organize English classes in some Muhammadiyah schools in the morning, either for elementary, junior or senior high schools.
Other activities like inter cultural night, cooking different kind of foods from different countries, movie nights, outing together on holidays are also suggested to the volunteers to organize together with the children for raising self confident and self esteem as well as inter cultural learning aspect of the children. Skills classes can be organized accordingly to develop the skills of the children that later on they can use the skills to earn money when they are out from the orphanage.
Work: Organizing additional English lesson for the children in the afternoon, organizing english classes at schools in the morning where the children are going to, organizing different kind of skills development activities like cooking, drawing, music, etc, organizing inter cultural night for example movie nights or other cultural performances together with the children.

Some ex long term volunteers set up a scheme to raise some fund and send the children to the university.
The additional tasks for the volunteers will be preparing the senior high school children to pass the final national examination and enrollment test, selecting the children that will get the scholarship, mentoring and monitoring the children who get the scholarship.

IIWC-LMTV03/Batu Slump Area Project/Batu Village Demak Regency/Kid, Edu/May 2012 onward/18+/2vols
Batu village is a small village in Karang Tengah Municipality Demak Regency, in the side of the famous North Java main land road. This small village is famous around the neighboring villages and areas because of the fact that 80% out of the 600 villagers, every Friday, will go to the street or mosques in Semarang city for begging money from the Friday pilgrimage people. To get more money, they will take their children with them because people will tend give money (or more money) to the children rather than to adults.
This attitude of taking the children to beg for money becomes a problem when the children have to leave school every Friday. Furthermore, most children will prefer to go to street to beg to get money that they can easily spend rather than staying at school. As the result, the number of drop out children from school is quite high.
Based on this condition, one of local NGOs working for the street children initiated an education project for the children by providing additional lesson in the afternoon for Math and English so that the children could get better mark and understanding of the subjects at school. It is expected that if the children get better mark and understanding at school then they and their parents will be proud of their work and the parents will not take them to the street for begging money anymore.
Unfortunately, last year, there was no more funding available for this additional activity. Thus, the local NGO could not continue the project.
The fact that IIWC have been working together with this local NGO in the same venue for work camp and that the work camp brought positive impact in engaging the children in the study atmosphere and creating interesting activities for the children that positively reduce the chance and desire from parents to take the children to the street, IIWC sees it as an opportunity to do further intervention for their education purposes because it is very important to keep the children at school.
Aims of this project are to reduce the time spent on the street to earn money (or the chance that the children will be taken to the street by their parents to the street) and to motivate the children to focus more to their school, to give different perspective to the parents about education and the future of the children, to create community based activity for the children and the community bring about the education issue.
Work: the volunteers will be assigned for: Organizing additional English class for street children (or children with high risk to be street children) in slump area of Batu Village in the afternoon as one of the strategies to reduce the time spent on the street for earning money and supporting their obligatory subject at school, Organizing leisure activities for the children on free times or public holidays emphasizing active participation of the children and promotion of children rights, Organizing skill development program for the children as one of the alternatives strategies to empower the children for the future way of income generating activities and Personal and public hygiene education for the children due to the fact that the children are living in a slum area with poor hygienic condition.

Project: Vulnerable group especially less fortunate children in the city area and sub-urban area with various backgrounds is not yet holistically supported by the government or by other formal institutions in Indonesia. Children living in a prostitution area potentially experience daily lives with less non-formal educative interaction and space for playing with their peers. In Tegalrejo Prostitution area situated in Semarang region uptown the city live more than 15 children with this less advantage situation. Based on this fact, IIWC is fully aware that there is a need of comprehensive support address this issue. As an NGO organizing IVS projects in Indonesia, IIWC observed that IVS projects with long term goal involving all stakeholders could be one of best solution of this issue. So, since 2006 IIWC has started some IVS actions for children living in Tegalrejo prostitution area by organizing annual bilateral workcamps with Japanese groups, Dutch group, and once with international group. Project: MTs Nurul Huda is one of Islamic schools which located in Demak Regency. This school is not part of government school. Even they got some support from government but the rest of fees should be bear by the student. Although, this is such kind of private school but almost all the students here are from poor family. So, actually the school fee paid by the student isn’t a lot. And why their parents choose this school because they prefer to send their children to Islamic schools better than to normal public school is because of in this school the student get more religion lesson that their parents expect from. The number of children now is about 500-600 with 15 classrooms. Almost all the teacher are not civil servant, so they are paid by school with limited salary. Most of the teacher working here also has another main job that normally in farming. So, sometimes some teachers are not coming to schools because they have to take care of their farming when its time for planting either harvesting. There are three English teachers here but some are not really from study English background, and even for speaking English they can’t do it. The students here is just study English by writing without knowing or practicing how to speak. With all the globalization challenge, student is now demanded to be able to communicate in English. But some problems come to students here because their parents are not able to send them to have English course after school. For them, sending their children to school is already precious thing in life. Seeing the life of people here, normally after finish from junior high school some students not continue to high school because of economic condition of their parents. Some are working, and some are getting married for girls. It’ll be very helpful if there’s volunteer who helps for teaching English in this school in order to motivate the children to be able speak English and can use English to face the life challenge.
