Workcamps in Island

SEEDS 77. Mývatn lake - Magical Iceland
15/09 - 29/09
ENVI / CONS
8 Volunteers
Age: 18+

WORK/PROJECT: SEEDS volunteers will be working in the area of the fourth biggest lake in Iceland. The environment of the lake is a paradise and a must see for everyone coming visit the country. The project's goal is to help in preserving the area.
Our main goal in the workcamp will be to fix hiking paths, as marking new ones in areas where it is needed. During summer time there is a lot and constant traffic of visitors in the area; it is as popular to stop and enjoy the scenery for Icelanders as well as for foreign visitors.
The working plan will be very flexible and it will depend on the needs of our local hosts, the advance of the diverse projects and of course on the weather conditions. We will help to preserve the local environment and get practical experience during work.
Work may be physically demanding and involve hikes to reach the sites. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging them and this important work also helps to improve their safety.
ACCOMMODATION: We will stay in a local house; sleeping on mattresses on the floor. Please bring your own sleeping bag. We will receive food and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Equipped kitchen and washing machine are available.
Please do not forget some traditional food from your home country for the international evening.
LOCATION: North Iceland is the land of huge fjords and valleys. There are fishing and agriculture in the big fertile valleys. The mountain ranges between them are equally monstrous reaching from the high plains inland and usually ending in steep slopes or cliffs by the sea.
We will be working in the area of Mývatnssveit (Lake Mývatn and surroundings), located in the north of Iceland. In earlier days, the people living in the Mývatn area made their living mostly from agriculture and by trout fishing in lake Mývatn.
Mývatn is the fourth largest lake in Iceland, covering 36.5 square kilometers, or approximately 14 square miles. It is situated at 277 meters (908 feet) above sea level, very indented and with more than 40 small islands. Mývatn is shallow, with a maximum depth of only about 5 meters.
The Mývatn area is home to more species of ducks (15) than any other place on earth, with a very diverse bird life in general. Mývatn's natural beauty is unparalleled. A large stream of travelers visits Mývatn in the summer, but many believe the lake and its surroundings to be no less impressive in the wintertime. Many places around Mývatn have a particular attraction for travelers, such as the strange formations of Dimmuborgir, the pseudo-craters around Skútustaðir, the hot springs east of Námaskarð, Höfði, Hverfjall, Leirhnjúkur/Krafla, Grjótagjá and others.
LANGUAGE: English will be the official language in the camp; high proficiency is not a requirement.
STUDY THEME: This workcamp has an educational/awareness-raising approach to environmental awareness, nature-protection and sustainable development topics. The group is encouraged to organise and develop fun, interactive and educational activities within the project.
TERMINAL: International Airport: Keflavík/Reykjavík (KEF). Bus station: Central Reykjavík (BSÍ).
SEEDS organises the "minibus option", a shared transport from Reykjavík to the camps and vice-versa, which apart from being cheaper and more convenient, allows volunteers to meet fellow campers and have a relaxed trip, while stopping on the way for interesting and tourist sites.
EXTRAS / SPECIAL REMARKS: Participation fee EUR 100.
Places located in natural areas of extreme beauty. Hikes and free time activities in the area will be arranged. Volunteers need motivation to work outdoors. We will have very good chances to see the Northen Lights (Aurora Borealis) as long as the sky is clear and conditions right.

SEEDS 79. SEEDS Autumn Photo Marathon
07/10 - 21/10
CULT / ENVI
14 Volunteers
Age: 16 +

WORK & STUDY/PROJECT: SEEDS volunteers in this project will be part of the 7th SEEDS international photo marathon in Iceland! One of our objectives is to deliver messages and draw the attention to the local population through pictures and photos made during the camp! The main idea and task of the project is involvement and participation of the volunteers in the SEEDS Photo Marathon.
SEEDS coordinators (among them a professional international photographer) will have prepared few different topics on which the participants will base their entries to the competition; those topics will be mainly related to the work of SEEDS: Environment and intercultural understanding.
The autumn in the northern hemisphere offers a great opportunity to make photos, the beauty of new fallen snow and frozen water and the contrast of light and shadow are inspiration for many photographers.
Participants need to take their own digital cameras and its main work will be done by walking or cycling all around the city and taking photographs on the issues given; the best pictures will be selected for a final exhibition, which will be the last part of the project.
We shall be prepared for walking, flexible time schedule (early morning photo sessions, night photographing). A session in the surroundings of Reykjavík will be organised. We hope that volunteers will make a serious effort to achieve a high level of work with original ideas, interesting and creative results.
This project will combine different tasks within Reykjavík city ensuring daily diversity and various experiences for the volunteers. Additional activities for us will be focused on keeping Reykjavík and its public areas lively, attractive and charming for locals and visitors. Tasks may involve house painting to cover graffiti tags, tiding up public spaces and face-lifting the city before the winter.
ACCOMMODATION: We will stay in a local house in Reykjavík; sleeping in shared rooms. Bringing your own sleeping bag is needed. We will receive food and be in charge of the different cooking and cleaning activities. Equipped kitchen and washing machine are available.
Please do not forget some traditional food from your home country for the international evening.
LOCATION: Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, often called "the nightlife capital of the north". But there is more to Reykjavik than pubs and clubs. Reykjavík also gathers the most interesting of Icelandic culture. It is an International city with a lively Cosmopolitan cultural scene.
The population of the city is over 200,000 including the metropolitan area, so two thirds of Iceland's inhabitants live here. Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with beautiful nature, using renewable energy sources - geothermal power and glacial rivers.
During this month we will have great chances to see spectacular Northern lights (aurora borealis). The warm geothermal swimming pools offer a great way of relaxation; dipping into a hot pot, surrounded by snow and stars shining above is an experience not to miss.
LANGUAGE: English will be the language of the camp; high proficiency is not required.
STUDY THEME: This workcamp has an educational/awareness-raising approach to environmental awareness, nature-protection and sustainable development topics. The group is encouraged to organise and develop fun, interactive and educational activities within the project.
TERMINAL: Closest international Airport: Keflavík/Reykjavík (KEF). Bus station: Central Reykjavík (BSÍ).
EXTRAS: Participation fee EUR 180,- (Euros).

WF128 Water, nature and sustainable energy 05.10 - 18.10 ENVI / STUDY 14 vol

Project and location: Iceland is a country extremely rich in water resources. Strong rivers and big lakes with fresh water can be found all around the island and under the surface there are huge cold water springs fed from high in the mountains by gradual filter of rainfall, snow and ice melt.

Situated on the mid-Atlantic ridge, there is constant, volcanic activity beneath the surface in various parts of the island. As a result, there are huge amounts of hot water reservoirs in the ground. This geothermal water is used for making electricity and to heat up most of the houses. There is also a lot of cold water coming from the mountains and glaciers, that water is used to create energy in hydropower plants.

Iceland is the only western country that produces all its electricity from emission-free and sustainable natural resources in the form of geothermal and hydro power. Iceland's electricity production is an environment friendly product from the country's natural resources. In most parts of the world, increased needs for electricity are met by burning greater quantities of polluting fossil fuels. In Iceland this is done with geothermal steam and hydropower

The camp will take place in two different places, in the capital city Reykjavik and than in the south part of Iceland

In Reykjavik you can experience easily the pure energy at the heart of Iceland's capital city - whether from the boiling thermal energy underground, the natural green energy within the city and around it. Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. South Iceland contains many of Iceland's foremost natural treasures. Many of the nation's best-known historical sites are in South Iceland, such as Þingvellir and Skálholt. In the area you can find strong rivers, hot springs, Geysir, glaciers and waterfalls.

Work: We will work five days a week with the weekends free. From 09.00 to 12.00 we will do some environmental outdoor work - the tasks are not set yet but possible tasks are planting trees, fixing hiking paths, weeding and etc. After lunch we will work on the study theme of the WorkCamp: "Water, nature and sustainable energy". We will have workshops and discussions and we will also visit geothermal- and hydropower plants, geothermal hot springs areas, Geysir, several waterfalls, spring water bottling company, Industrial companies and other companies which are using water and electricity as main resources.
Study theme: Water, nature and sustainable energy
Leisure time: Free access to all the modern geothermal swimming pools in Reykjavik, We will do some excursions around the south and southeast of Iceland related to the study theme of the camp.

Project and location: In Reykjavik you can easily feel the pure energy at the heart of Iceland‘s capital city - whether it springs from the underground boiling thermal energy or radiates from the green scenery surrounding the city. Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. Reykjavik offers both the features of a modern and innovative society and the marvelous traits of a unique natural landscape.
The population of the Capital Area is about 200,000. It is spread across a peninsula offering a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean from nearly every part of the city. In the summer, you can sit by the harbor at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.

During this project we will collect volcanic stones from specific places in Iceland where nature has shaped and made really beautiful magic stones, afterwards we will convert them into runes in our workshop in Reykjavik. There are different places around Iceland where we can collect the stones. We will explain to the volunteers the history of those places and the importance of the healing energy from the stones. We will visit the following places:

• Snæfellsnes, where you can find the glacier Snæfellsjökull which is famous for the power and energy that many spiritually-minded people sense. It is said to be one of the seven greatest energy centres of the earth.
• Reynisfjara, the black beach of Vik which is without a doubt the most beautiful beach in Iceland.
• The peninsula of Reykjanes which has a lot of hot springs and new volcanic lava.

By visiting those places we will give the opportunity to the participants to travel in Iceland and to discover and learn a lot about the magic of different parts of the island.

Work:

The aim of the project is to give the opportunity to the participants to learn about the myths and legends of Runes and the old Viking religion. We will create Runes out of Icelandic volcanic magic stones and produce runes and handicrafts enough for the participant to take one set home and to leave one in WF cultural and handicrafts centre in Reykjavik.

The workshop will be divided in 2 parts:

Workshop 1º:

1. Travel to collect the stones around Iceland
2. define the different draws that we will tattooed in the stones
3. Tattoo the stones and transform them into Runes
4. Paint on red acrylic the tattoo of the runes
5. Cut the skin and make the bag for the runes
6. Print and create the legend for each bag

Workshop 2º:

1. Travel to collect the stones around Iceland
2. Define and the different draws and the different designs for the neckles and bracelets
3. Tattoo the stones with the different designs
4. Paint on red acrylic the tattoo of the Runes
5. Finalize the different neckles and bracelets

During the workshop one of our Icelandic volunteers Kjartan will show us how to use the runes and explain us about the myths and legends around the Runes and the old Viking religion. During the camp we will also visit and get guidance from one of the best artists in this field here in Iceland.

Leisure time: We will have free access to all the geothermal swimming pools in Reykjavik

Study theme: The power of the Runes and the old Viking religion

WF127 Hveragerði - health and environment 27.09 - 11.10 ENVI / MANU 10 vol
WF 97 Hveragerði - health and environment 11.10 - 25.10 ENVI / MANU 10 vol
WF 98 Hveragerði - health and environment 25.10 - 08.11 ENVI / MANU 10 vol
WF 99 Hveragerði - health and environment 08.11 - 22.11 ENVI / MANU 10 vol

Project and location:
Hveragerði is a small town of about 1,700 inhabitants that lies some 45 km east of Reykjavík. This friendly little community sits on top of a highly active geothermal field which provides heat for hundreds of greenhouses where fruit, flowers and vegetables are produced throughout the year. Even bananas grow in these greenhouses! The name Hveragerði means ‘hot springs garden.' Geothermal energy is Hveragerði's lifeblood, and you probably won't find such a natural wonder in the middle of a populated area anywhere else in the world. A very interesting site is Gufudalur, the lovely ‘Steam Valley' behind the town. The whole valley explodes with hot springs, geysers, mud pots, fumaroles and steaming vents.
Our host is the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic which is a part of the Nature Health Association of Iceland located in Hveragerdi. The Clinic is a place of choice for all those who are in need of rehabilitation, regaining their strength or simply in need to rest. It has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. It is the oldest sanatorium in Iceland and, one of the two most important rehabilitation clinics in Iceland. Every year approximately 2,000 patients and other guests enjoy the diverse rehabilitation programs.
The Clinic does its best to meet the needs of all guests by enhancing their physical as well as mental well being. The basic philosophy is to build up clients' health and improve their quality of life and well being. The approach builds self-confidence and individual awareness of the fact that only he or she is responsible for his/her own health.
Mud baths, herbal baths, therapeutic massage and lymphatic drainage massage are some of the special therapies used in combination with other treatments. The association has a horticultural and environmental department with forestry and greenhouses. The volunteers will mainly work in that field.
Work: The work will mostly be focused on forestry, gardening and greenhouse work. We will also pick some herbs for making tea
The amount and type of work will depends largely on weather conditions, therefore we have to be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, even though, hopefully, it will be nice most of the time.

Leisure time: Free access to the local swimming pool.
Accommodation & Food: We will be staying in a very nice fully equipped flat. Participants are asked to bring a sleeping bag.
All meals will be provided and cooked by our hosts. The food in the project will mainly be vegetarian food, but two times a week we will have delicious Icelandic fish. The food in this place is very well known here in Iceland for the high standard of quality.

Language: The language of the work camp is English.

Extra info: There is an extra participation fee of 120 Euros for this work camp.

Terminal: Intl. Airport: Keflavík (KEF), Reykjavík. WF Iceland will organize a minibus to the project site for a fair prize.

Eskifjörður is a beautyful fishing town (population: 972) which is located at the northern shore of the fjord Eskifjörður. It is built on a small sand spit and up the slopes of the mountain which rises above the town. Its main industries are fishing and small-scale farming. Eskifjörður became an authorized trade port in 1786 and has been a commercial center since 1798. One of the several shops in Eskifjörður, Gamlabúð, built in 1816, houses the Maritime Museum Of East Iceland. Eskifjörður town faces the mountain Hólmatindur, from the top of which you can view some of the tallest mountains in the Icelandic interior. One of the favored sights in the area is the Helgustaðanáman mine, which is one of the world's best-known sources of Icelandic spar. The area, which is just a ten-minute drive from the town, is a nature reserve and open to all, free of charge. A swimming pool with hot pots (geothermal pools) and a sauna is located in Eskifjörður, as well as a gallery and crafts shop.
Work: Our work during this camp will depends on the availability of work. Possible tasks are for example planting trees, taking old fences down and beautifying the town and the surrounding area. We may also clean up the coastline and even make hiking paths. The work available will depend on the weather condition and that's why we have to be a bit flexible. Please keep in mind that the work might be physically hard and you should be prepared for unfriendly weather, even though it will be nice most of the time, hopefully.

Leisure time: Free access to the local swimming pool, guided hikes with locals. Excursion or a boat trip will be organized by the hosting partner.

Accommodation and food: We will be staying in a nice community center. Mattresses will be provided and everyone is asked to bring his/her own warm sleeping bag. We will have showers at the local swimming pool and sports centre.

The food will be provided for the duration of the workcamp and everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking/cleaning. It would be nice to share new and different dishes, so please remember to bring along recipes from your own countries.

Language: The language of the camp is English.

Terminal: Intl. Airport: Keflavík (Reykjavík), KEF. The national airport in Egilsstaðir is 40 km away from the project.
WF Iceland will organize a bus from Reykjavik to the workcamp site for a fair price (including lots of sightseeing on the way).

SEEDS 56. Organic farming in Iceland (2)
18/09 - 02/10
AGRI
14 Volunteers
Age: 18+

WORK/PROJECT: SEEDS volunteers will be working at one of the few organic farms in Iceland, located in the East of the country. Our main tasks will be to harvest (by hand) vegetables, mainly potatoes, beats, beetroots and lettuce. Alongside the harvesting tasks, we will clean the vegetables and make them ready for the consumers in the Icelandic market. Around the farm there is a young forest that can be maintained and cleaned in case the harvesting jobs are done.
Volunteers need motivation to work mainly outdoors on physical jobs and under changeable weather conditions. We will be provided with good waterproof overalls and gloves for the work.
You can see pictures from similar project organised in the farm last year at http://www.seedsiceland.org/pictures-iceland-en-galleries/pictures/2009....

ACCOMMODATION: We will be hosted in a local house; sleeping on beds or mattrasses in several rooms, shared by 2-4 volunteers each. Bringing own sleeping bag is needed. All facilities as showers and washing mashine are available. Food ingredients will be provided and a kitchen will be available; we will share the duties of preparing and cooking the meals.
Please, keep in mind that during this workcamp only vegetarian food will be provided, which also means that we will be mainly eating local, organic food from the farm.
LOCATION: The farm, one of the few and largest organic farms in Iceland is run with the large support of volunteers; who have been helping in the project of organic locally grown crops for the last years. About 20% of the farm is used for cultivation of different crops and the rest of the land is grassland, there is a forest of about one million trees planted there since starting the farm in the 1970s. The two major crops grown are barley and potatoes, and others include parsley, kale, beetroot, lettuce, kohlrabi, carrots and cabbage.
The farm is located in the municipality of Fljótsdalshérað, Iceland's easternmost populous municipality; 16 km from the largest town in the Eastern Iceland - Egilsstaðir (population 2300). Total population is about 3.700 (01.01.2009) and it is the largest municipality (in area) in the country.
The wild reindeers of Iceland are found in Fljótsdalshérað, they are about ten thousand and also the biggest forest in Iceland, Hallormstaðarskógur is located within the district.
The East Fjords is a region of a special landscape, dominated by long, narrow fjords and steep mountains. This is one of the oldest regions of Iceland shaped by glaciers in the Ice Age.
LANGUAGE: English will be the language of the camp; high proficiency is not required.
STUDY THEME: This workcamp has an educational/awareness-rising approach to environmental, nature-protection and sustainable development topics. Apart from the leader, we will have an environmental messenger, a person dedicated to organising and developing fun, interactive and educational activities within the project.
TERMINAL: Closest International Airport: Keflavík - Reykjavík (KEF). The closest bus stop and local airport is located in Egilsstaðir (EGS). The harbour for ferries coming from Faroe Islands and Denmark is in Seyðisfjörður, 27 km from Egilsstaðir.
SEEDS organises the "minibus option", a shared transport from Reykjavík to the camps and back again, which apart from being cheaper and more convenient, allows volunteers to meet fellow campers and have a relaxed trip, while stopping on the way for interesting and tourist sites.
We will try to organise the minibus option in such a way, that we will explore all parts of Iceland and make a circle around the country through the road number 1.
SPECIAL REMARKS / EXTRAS: Participation fee EUR 130,- (Euros).
Free time activities will be organized for SEEDS volunteers; as day trips and excursions in the area. Some of them will be organised by SEEDS and our hosts free of charge, some others might require some financial contribution.

WORK/PROJECT: SEEDS volunteers will be working on few different projects close to Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The main task will be to work in and around a newly found archaeology site in the area. The work will be done under supervision from a professional.

We will also be working on different issues in the area, like fixing and maintaining a walking path made by SEEDS volunteers in 2009, planting trees and some work on a Viking wall that was renovated by us. Other projects in the neighbourhood might also involve planting trees and removing old fences.

ACCOMMODATION: We will be hosted in a local house; sleeping on mattresses on the floor; please bring your own sleeping bag.

Food ingredients will be provided and a kitchen will be available, volunteers will share the duties of preparing and cooking meals.

LOCATION: The working site is located about 5 Km of the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur, within easy reach of the main ring road, and around 3 hours driving distance from the capital Reykjavík.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur is located in the south of Iceland between Vík and Höfn. The scenery is spectacular, with the glacier Myrdalsjökull to the west and Europe´s largest glacier Vatnajökull, containing Iceland´s highest peak, to the east. The area is welcoming with mountains that stretch proudly towards the sky and to the south there is the infinite beauty stretching out from the sky to the sea.

The village, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, became well known in Iceland during the Lakagígar volcano eruptions in 1783. The pastor of the local church, Jón Steingrímsson, delivered what became known as the "Fire Sermon". The legend says that this sermon stopped the lava flow, and the village was spared at the last moment. The current church, constructed in 1974, was built in memory of Reverend Jón Steingrímsson.

The area is surrounded with the Landbrotsholar pseudo-craters which are some seven thousand years old. Tröllshylur is also close by and the beautiful long canyon Fjarðarárgljúfur. An attraction close by is Kirkjugólf (Churchfloor), a natural pavement of basalt. These are basalt columns in the earth, but only the top can be seen, and, as the name suggests, have the appearance of a paved church floor. This lava formation has similar origins to the Giant's Causeway in Ireland. All these attractions contribute to Kirkjubæjarklaustur being a popular place.

It cannot be forgotten that there are also homes of elves in the area, they have a village close by and some claim they have seen the hidden people living there.

LANGUAGE: English will be the official language in the camp, high proficiency is not required.

WF164 The power of the Runes and the old Viking religion 10.11 - 23.11 ART 8 vol

7. Travel to collect the stones around Iceland
8. define the different draws that we will tattooed in the stones
9. Tattoo the stones and transform them into Runes
10. Paint on red acrylic the tattoo of the runes
11. Cut the skin and make the bag for the runes
12. Print and create the legend for each bag

Workshop 2º:

6. Travel to collect the stones around Iceland
7. Define and the different draws and the different designs for the neckles and bracelets
8. Tattoo the stones with the different designs
9. Paint on red acrylic the tattoo of the Runes

Leisure time: We will have free access to all the geothermal swimming pools in Reykjavik WF Iceland will organize interesting trips for the volunteers to areas in the West and South of Iceland for a fair prize. One of the trips will be to the volcano Eyjafjallajokull where we will use the heat from the lava to cook some delicious food.

Study theme: The power of the Runes and the old Viking religion

The population of the Capital Area is about 200,000. It is spread across a peninsula offering a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean from nearly every part of the city. In the summer, you can sit by the harbor at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.
The project is divided into two parts. The first part is the "Small space organic gardening" and the second part is International and traditional cuisine.
Small space organic gardening
WF Iceland has a small community in the centre of Reykjavik where 50 to 80 volunteers are living at each time. The organization is now located in six houses in the same street in the heart of 101 centre Reykjavik. There are gardens between some of the houses and also we have backyards, flat roofs and other open spaces around. We would like to grove our own vegetable, spices and other organic food in that place. We also want to make the area more beautiful and to do so we will plant flowers and trees in the gardens.
Organic gardening is becoming more popular now as people try to live a healthier greener life and spend less money in the process. For those who live in a city or in an apartment with very limited outdoor space or backyards, it is difficult to grow their own vegetables. We want to involve our volunteers in a "small space gardening" and show them that it is possible and that we can grow organic vegetables at our place.
We will visit the Eco village in Solheimar www.solheimar.is , The health clinic in Hveragerði www.hnlfi.is and farms in the south of Iceland which can teach us a lot about the topic of this workcamp.
International and traditional cuisine
The volunteers will get to know the traditional Icelandic food and how to prepare it. We will not only cook Icelandic food but also delicious food from many other countries. The idea is to use the green products from our gardens (when they are ready) and also to pick berries, mushrooms, spices and herbs which can be found in the area of Reykjavik and outside of the city. We will also go fishing in a lake in Borgarfjordur which is about one hour away from Reykjavik. The volunteers will also learn how to make different kind of bread, cakes, jam and tea. Several times during the camp we will invite the other volunteers in Reykjavik for a dinner or a small party to taste the delicates that we will make in our Organic kitchen.

Work: We will make the Organic garden, do the preparation for planting, clean the area, gather materials and decide about the design and plot arrangements, than we will select the plants and put them in the soil. The garden has to be taken care of every single day for two or three hours. We will also make a compast and organize the recycling system in the volunteers houses in Hverfisgata.
The volunteers will cook together, study and learn about different food. They will be supervised by the WF staff members, leaders and one of the WF members who is working in one of the best known restaurants in Reykjavik. The volunteers should use their initiative and be creative. We will once and a while prepare dinner and parties for other volunteers in Reykjavik. There will be a lot of food and even more of fun.

Leisure time: We will have free access to all the seven geothermal swimming pools in Reykjavik .
WF Iceland will organize interesting trips for the volunteers to areas in the West and South of Iceland for a fair prize. One of the trips will be to the volcano Eyjafjallajokull where we will use the heat from the lava to cook some delicious food.

Accommodation & Food:
We will stay in a nice fully equipped apartment in the centre of Reykjavik. Beds will be provided but volunteers should bring their sleeping bags.
The food will be supplied for the duration of the work camp and everyone is expected to do his/her fair part of the cooking/cleaning. It would be nice to share new and different dishes, so please remember to bring along recipes from your own countries.

Language: The language of the work camp is English.

Extra: There is an extra participation fee of 150 Euros for this work camp. This camp is a great way to share knowledge and learn about organic food and traditional cuisine

WF195 Visual arts and RIFF Reykjavík International film festival 17.09 - 04.10 ART/FEST/STUDY 20 vol
Project and location:
In Reykjavik you can easily feel the pure energy at the heart of Iceland‘s capital city - whether it springs from the underground boiling thermal energy or radiates from the green scenery surrounding the city. Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. Reykjavik offers both the features of a modern and innovative society and the marvelous traits of a unique natural landscape.
The population of the Reykjavik Area is about 200,000. Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula offering a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean from nearly every part of the city. In the summer, you can sit by the harbour at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.
The world's northernmost capital is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja, which keeps a watchful eye on the city, and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay. On a sunny day, the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier towers over the western horizon, while mountainous moonscapes spread to the southeast.
Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF) was founded in 2004 by a group of film enthusiasts and professionals with the goal of creating an annual international film festival in Reykjavik. The aim is to establish a major film event to enrich and enliven the local film culture, but moreover, to become an international attraction. We believe that by building up an innovative film festival in Reykjavik, our foreign guests will have a unique opportunity to participate in an exciting cultural event, as well as visiting a country renowned for its natural wonders and dynamic culture.
Study: For the first four days of the camp we will have a study session about Icelandic film making. We will watch several Icelandic movies and go for visits to film producers, directors and other people in the field. We will also make our own short film down town Reykjavik.
Work: We will help the organizers of the Reykjavík International Film Festival with different tasks before and during the festival. Our group of international volunteers will work closely with the team of Icelandic volunteers which are in most cases students from the Universities in Reykjavik.
We will put up posters and hand out leaflets and brochures around the city before the festival starts; some of the volunteers will be asked to pick up international guests at the airport. During the festival we will sell entrance tickets and festival passes, setup the venues before and after the movies, and control the entrances if needed. There are many other chores to be done and we will have to be flexible and willing to give a helping hand whenever that is necessary.
The festival is one of the most important cultural events in Reykjavik and the work of the volunteers is a crucial contribution to the event. It is interesting for the volunteers to be a part of this international project and have the opportunity to experience the amazing atmosphere. It is very important that the volunteers are interested in the topic of the festival.
Leisure time: We will have free access to all the geothermal pools in Reykjavik and WF Iceland will offer the volunteers great excursions for a fair prize.
Accommodation & Food:
We will stay in a fully equipped house in the centre of Reykjavík. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
The food will be supplied for the duration of the work camp and everyone is expected to do his/her fair part of the cooking/cleaning. It would be nice to share new and different dishes, so please remember to bring along recipes from your own countries.

SEEDS 78. Nature & Culture in the South of Iceland
11/09 - 25/09
ENVI / ARTS
8 Volunteers
Age: 18+

WORK/PROJECT: This project gives SEEDS volunteers the opportunity to work in very diverse tasks; assisting in the early phases of preparing a local museum, doing environmental work and helping with traditional farming. It takes place in an agricultural area in the South of Iceland which is rich in both, culture and history.
When preparing the museum we will move collection items into a storage house, tear down old houses, find reusable material for reconstruction of other houses and do some maintenance work on the future museum.
The environmental work will consist of collecting drift wood in the beach, cleaning the coast line and marking hiking paths, taking care of popular spots which need to be tendered after the busy summer season, when most of the travellers visits the area.
The farming will offer us to get to know the Icelandic farm life by milking the cows, working in the stables and assist with the busy household tasks. We will be part of a family and work hand in hand with them.
We will also have the chance to participate in "Réttir" (the annual sheep round-up in the area). Réttir is one of the most beautiful Icelandic traditions. The annual round-up of sheep and horses is very popular and people come from the city and to take part in the activities. Réttir is a tradition which goes back a thousand years to the Viking settlement.
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will stay in shared rooms in a sleeping bag accommodation with access to kitchen and bathroom. Other guests or travellers might be in the house at the same time as it is a guesthouse accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
The group will be responsible for cooking and cleaning activities and please do not forget some traditional food from your home country for the international evening.
LOCATION: The south of Iceland is one of the most popular destinations for travellers as the landscape offers diverse and breathtaking nature. Rivers and waterfalls, mountains, glaciers and long beaches form a contrast and offer a wide range of experiences. The project takes place in an active Icelandic farm in south Iceland with 35 life stock: There of 8 milking cows, 330 sheep, hens, cat and a puppy so it gives us a good example of rural living in Iceland.
Apart from traditional farming the inhabitants are building up a museum which will weave together history, culture and nature. The farm is on a flat area between Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Vík í Mýrdal and has amazing view to sands, mountains and glaciers in the west and north and to the Atlantic Ocean in the south. Mýrdalssandur is a sandy area about 700 km2 and its mythical appearance has been an inspiration both in traditional folklore and in modern lyrics and stories today.
In September we will have very good chances to see the Northen Lights (Aurora Borealis) as long as the sky is clear and conditions right.
LANGUAGE: English will be the official language in the camp; high proficiency is not a requirement.
TERMINAL: Closest International Airport: Keflavík/Reykjavík (KEF).
Volunteers should have a motivation for working with outdoors and getting to know ways of living in rural areas in Iceland. We will have very good chances to see the Northen Lights (Aurora Borealis) as long as the sky is clear and conditions right.
