VFP 23-10 WELLS, MAINE 25-Aug to 16-Sept ENVI/MANU/FEST Age 18+ 6 VOLS
WORK: Come to the beautiful seacoast of southern Maine and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Your work will include improving wildlife habitat and trail work at the Reserve and often painting and maintenance rojects on our historic buildings. This entails getting dirty and working hard. You may also help with projects for artner conservation organizations. Your major project will be helping prepare for and staff a large Nature Crafts Festival fund-raising event. Work involves setting up and taking-down, assisting other volunteers and staff with food, arking, recycling, and many other jobs. Educational programs are available to volunteers. The Reserve has a private each and many nature trails.
ACCOMMODATION: In a new dorm with comfortable beds, modern kitchen facilities, and common area. Bicycles vailable. Vols will cook their own meals.
LANGUAGE: English.
LOCATION: Wells is 1/2 hour south of Portland, Maine and 1/2 hour north of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The ,250-acre research and education reserve includes beach, coastal marsh, scenic uplands, historic farm buildings, nd is a sanctuary for endangered plants and wildlife.
TERMINAL: Boston Massachusetts or Portland Maine, closest airports. Train available to Wells.
SPECIAL REMARKS: No smoking is allowed at any of the work sites or on the property of the Reserve.
 
 


VFP 04D-10 DANBY, VERMONT 06-Sep to 24-Sep CONS/ENVI Age 18+ 6 VOL
This project, hosted by the GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB, is for vols who are experienced at camping with no running water or electricity. Vols must be able to carry a 40 - 60 pound (18-27kg) backpack several miles (a few kilometers.) Join with local volunteers to build a piece of the Appalachian Trail, a wilderness footpath that runs through the mountains of the eastern U.S. http://www.greenmountainclub.org/
WORK: Can include reconstructing a hiking path by building stone structures (stairs, walls) and by digging tread ways and drainage ditches or helping rebuild a trail shelter. You will get muddy! Learn trail building skills. Work safety is our highest priority.
LOCATION: Danby is 2 hours east of Albany, New York in southern Vermont.
TERMINAL: Danby is accessed via Rutland Vermont which is served by Greyhound Bus from New York City or Albany, New York; Boston, Massachusetts and Burlington, Vermont; or by Amtrak from NYC or Albany.
ACCOMMODATION: Monday - Thursday nights at a primitive campsite in the mountains. Spend the days off at a base camp in town. Tents are provided.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Explore Vermont swimming holes, historic villages, and forested mountains.
SPECIAL REMARKS: Bring hiking boots, backpack, sleeping bag (rated to 20 F/ -6 C) and sturdy work clothes. Work is physically demanding and is done outside in all weather. Volunteers must plan to arrive Rutland on the Sunday at the beginning of the session for orientation, and depart on the Saturday at the end of the session.
